Universal Editions for Nicola Elias Rigato piano concert no.1
The 'Piano Concerto No. 1 - In the Absence of Gods and Demons' premiered by Erato Alakiozidou with the Dafo String Quartet in Krakow/ December 2022 is now officially printed by Universal Editions and is available. Nicola Elias Rigato is selected from Universal edtions and we are especially proud and happy. His music is really amazing and we believe in it.
Commissioned by the internationally acclaimed greek pianist Erato Alakiozidou, “Piano Concerto No.1, In the Absence of Gods and Demons” sheds light on the centuries-old tradition of concertos for piano and orchestra. Everything is reduced to a single movement. The orchestra is reduced to a quartet and the musical gestures of the piano create evanescent sounds fading into the atmosphere of chamber music.Read more

Nicola Elias Rigato Piano Concert No. 1 "in the Absence of Gods and Demons," premiere. 1/12/22
The Department of Percussion and Contemporary Music invites you to the seminar "New Discoveries, Currents, Solutions" on December 1, 2022, combined with a concert by the DAFō Quartet and Greek pianist Erato Alakiozidou.
The theme of the seminar will be a presentation of the lyricism and expressiveness of contemporary music, using as an example Nicola Elias Rigato's Piano Concerto No. 1 "In the Absence of Gods and Demonts," composed in 2022 for Greek pianist Erato Alakiozidou and the DAFō Quartet. The piece is distinguished by a continuous dichotomy between light and darkness in alternating musical elements of contrast. The unrelenting attempt to protect beauty surrounded by bitter dissonances and sonic disorientations is depicted in the fleeting sounds of the piano blending into the atmosphere of chamber music. The world premiere of "In the Absence of Gods and Demons" will take place on 1.12.2022 in the "Florianka" Auditorium at 18:00.

Hands-On Research Symposium 2019-Portugal

We are excited to announce that one of the guest artists and speakers at the Hands-On Research Symposium 2019 (October 28th - November 3rd, 2019) will be Erato Alakiozidou (Thessaloniki State Conservatory and Athens Conservatory).
Hands-On Research ConferenceThe Hands-On Research 2019 Conference aims to stimulate the discussion of ideas, practices, insights, outputs and developments in the field of artistic research. Originally conceptualised as a series of meetings focused on specific instrumental areas bridging the gap between artistic production and academic research, thus creating opportunities to combine artists’ and researchers’ knowledge, Hands-On Research has now expanded to encompass all artistic areas and will feature paper presentations, lecture-performances, round-table discussions and concerts.
Hands-On Piano
Hands-On Piano aims to explore the intersection between artistic practice/production and academic research in this specific instrumental area, with a special focus on the relation between reflexive aspects, remix practices and aesthetic appreciation in relation to piano performance.Within this scope, Hands-On piano involves the exploration of performance practices across genres, from western art music to jazz and improvised music, from the soloist to the chamber musician/ensemble perspective, and from pedagogical approaches to the demands of the music industries.

Music Diaries I.W.F took place in Thessaloniki( Panorama Municipality) 9-14 |07|2018.
A unique event due to the symbiosis between two types of meetings: the convention type, of an artistic nature, focusing on specific musical instruments, and the traditional type of academic research conference, but focusing on a specific instrumental area.

Review for Light Over Darkness March 2018 | Fachos de luz
16/03/2018 4:30 Fachos de luz
In Schnittke, as in Mahler and Shostakovich, sarcasm is another way The most foolish attempt to arrange synonym for "classical music" is to call it "serious music". First, because he disdains the seriousness of the art of a Bob Dylan or a Paulinho da Viola. Secondly, he ignores how much humor there is in the work of a Mozart or Haydn, who even reproduces the emission of gases through the anus - the popular fart - in the bassoon of the broad cantabile of his Symphony No. 93. Classical music can not only be quite graceful, and even frivolous or coarse, as it may present a strand of sarcasm. Not light humor, heavy irony. One thinks of Mahler, for example, forced to convert to Catholicism to become director of the opera in Vienna, but spreading Jewish melodies and funeral music through all his nine completed symphonies, as Leonard Bernstein pointed out. Later, Shostakovich mirrored his ambiguous relations with the USSR regime in the sarcasm embedded in his works. Mahler and Shostakovich are so close, musically speaking, that the Soviet was the first to be sought to complete the Symphony No. 10 of the Austrian. Shostakovich declined the invitation, not without a hint of irony: "It takes a deep dip in the composer's spiritual world." I've been listening to another sarcastic Soviet for some time. His name is Alfred Schnittke. He was born in 1934, of German Jewish father and Russian mother, also of German origin. The 20 years of his death are now remembered in 2018, among other ephemeris of classical music such as Debussy's 100th birthday, Bernstein's 100th birthday and tomorrow, the 90th anniversary of our Edino Krieger. Congratulations, Master. Schnittke was influenced by both the passionate Shostakovich and the cerebral serialism before, in the 1960s, he adopted what he called "polystilism." It was a kind of sound collage, made up of allusions, quotations, pastiches and juxtapositions of all previous schools in the history of music. That is, if a composer one day did by what to be called "postmodern", it was Schnittke. "The mission of my life is to unify serious music and light music, even if I break my neck," he wrote. In Schnittke, as in Mahler and Shostakovich, sarcasm is another way of saying despair. It brought from the cradle the feeling of inadequacy: it was genetically and culturally a German born in the USSR. His music has also never settled for the ideological patrolling of "socialist realism." There are, especially in the polystilistic phase, works of sweeping beauty. Classical, in the strict sense. Nobody calls it an "old-style suite for violin and piano" or composes "Concerti grossi" without maintaining an intimate yet fun relationship with tradition. However, such works only acquire full meaning if contrasted with others, dissonant, tortured. Even in these, however, the light suddenly penetrates the darkness. In fact, light and darkness are images often associated with Schnittke. Beyond cultural and political anguish, there was another source of despair: awareness of physical finitude. In 1985, he suffered a stroke, which left him in a coma. At the hospital, he was pronounced dead, but partially recovered and continued to produce. He traded Moscow for Hamburg in 1990. He suffered strokes until he died at age 63. Health problems were reflected in the work, of course. Schnittke became darker and more uniform than in the polystilistic phase. In fact, the melancholy had been insinuating since long before, 1972, when his mother died. After the loss, he converted to Christianity, without distinction between the Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches. Two newly released CDs bring compositions from this long morbid phase. The first reunites its quartet and quintet for piano to the quartet "In l'istesso tempo", of the Georgian Giya Kancheli. It is called "Light over darkness" and was recorded by the Lutoslawski Quartet with the pianist Erato Alakiozidou. Scnittke's quintet was inspired by his mother's death. It has four movements of mourning and one, the last, which is almost a box of hopeful music. Light triumphing over the darkness. The other CD was released by the Estonian Chamber Philharmonic Choir, ruled by Kaspars Putnins, and brings together Schnittke's great "Psalms of Repentance" to two short religious pieces by the Estonian Arvo Pärt. In fact, the "psalms" were taken from the poems of an anonymous Russian monk of the sixteenth century. The last of the 12 movements is sung the bocca chiusa, mouth closed, speechless. The effect is almost comforting. It contrasts with the disillusionment of the penultimate whose verses say: "Why bother in vain, knowing that our life does not last forever? / We all pass the same way / From darkness to light / From light to darkness."

Review Light Over Darkness| Classic French Magazine-March 2018
.LIGHT OVER DARKNESS by Erato Alakiozidou and Lutosławski Quartet reviewed in French magazine Classica by Sarah Léon:
"A dark piece in which we catch echoes of Malher and Shostakovich, Alfred Schnittke's Piano Quintet (1972-1976) is certainly a masterpiece. Five movements stamped with the seal of death follow one another implacably: four of them slow as laments, while the second, a squeaky waltz which slowly overturns and ends up as a lugubrious dirge, constitutes, if you want..., the exception. In the finale, a soothing melody in the higher range, composed almost exclusively over two notes, brings a ray of light on a dissonant bed of lower strings before a final waltz reminder, as a memory of the Imperial Vienna swallowed by the war. The Piano Quartet (1988) appears like the anamorphosis of a quartet barely sketched by Mahler in his youth. Schnittke chooses to make us hear the Mahlerian material initially distorted, loaded with parasitic lines and dissonant chords, over a piano ostinato which recalls the obsessive motif of Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel, before gradually revealing the embryonic melody of the original. Giya Kancheli's Piano Quartet "In istesso tempo" (1998) is in the same romantic-expressionist vein. Twenty minutes of crepuscular landscapes succeeding each other: alternately vehement, tragic, desperate, but also dreamy or ethereal, it perfectly complements Schnittke’ remarkable pieces." |

Camino De Genere

Camino de GenereGeneri e identità nelle arti no.1
Camino al Tagliamento (Udine), 9-11 marzo 2018
C O M U N I C A T O S T A M P A

In Blue and White Amsterdam - Coming on March

The basis for the choice of composers was that they be emblematic, distinguished for their technical skill, cohesion and clarity of musical thought. Composers who created a solid modern tradition in Greece and pave the way for the younger generation of composers. Included also are younger composers who have shown exemplary writing, creating new sonic worlds. Pluralism, as far as the works aesthetic approach is concerned, is one of the advantages of the present cd.
For 20 years Erato Alakiozidou has been involved with contemporary music and since 2000 with the promotion of works by Greek composers. All those years he has had the opportunity to meet and work with composers of different personality, age and style.... Several have dedicated works to me, which he has had the honor to present in world premiere performances.
The music Erato chose for this production, is a spiritual journey of self- discovery thought the sounds, that are creating a mystic atmosphere of abstraction and sensitivity- powerful as the pictures and smells of the Mediterranean. The power of the Mediterranean is effective to everyone that lives there. Most of us have felt this power in one way or another.

Some words from maestro Giya Kancheli

Dear Erato,
Here are few words about the album:
I was pleasantly surprised by the release of a CD album featuring my piano quartet L’istesso Tempo. I was pleased to find my work next to two compositions by Alfred Schnittke. Alfred was so close to me that I am taking the liberty of thanking Erato Alakiozidou and the Lutoslawski Quartet not only for myself, but also on behalf of my closest friend. Thank you for treating our music so caringly.

Hands on Piano- Aveiro Portugal /January 2018
‘Hands on’ PIANO is a meeting dedicated to the piano. It is a unique event due to the symbiosis between two types of meetings: the convention type, of an artistic nature, focusing on a specific musical instrument, and the traditional type of academic research conference, but focusing on a specific instrumental area. ‘Hands on’ PIANO aims to bridge the gap between artistic production and academic research, creating opportunities to combine artists’ and researchers’ knowledge, for mutual benefit. The first ‘hands on’ meeting took place in April 2017 at the University of Aveiro, dedicated to the flute (‘Hands on’ FLUTE). ‘Hands on’ PIANO will take place also at the University of Aveiro, from January 24th – 27th, 2018.

Review from the Russian Composers Dmitri Smirnov & Elena Firsova
Review Odradek CD 341
We really enjoyed listening to the incredible performance of music by Schnittke and Kancheli recorded on the “Light over darkness” CD. It was great to hear the “Quartet in L’istesso tempo” by Giya Kancheli for the first time in such wonderful presentation. But the main surprise for us was Piano Quintet by Alfred Schnittke that we have heard many times before in different interpretations, but this was something completely different: very exquisite, delicate, with no false pathos, with great understanding, and every note was full of meaning. The latter concerns even the silences inside pauses that we have never experienced listening to other performances of this masterpiece, and this we found absolutely magic.
